Fiber optic cables
Optický kabel tvoří optická vlákna, která jsou přenosovým médiem. Úkolem optického vlákna je přenést paprsek od zdroje k cíli, s co nejnižší ztrátou. Optická vlákna jsou velmi jemná a choulostivá na mechanické namáhání a ohyby, takže jsou sdružována do optických kabelů.
Optický kabel využívá světlovodný kabel, který je umístěn uvnitř. Díky fyzikálním vlastnostem přenosu dat pomocí modulované světelné vlny (místo elektrického proudu) není přenos rušen žádnými vnějšími vlivy. V současnosti se takové řešení používá nejčastěji pro přenos digitálního zvukového signálu a obrazu a také jiných dat.
